A comprehensive dental exam is performed at your initial dental visit and periodically afterwards. It includes the following:
-
Examination of diagnostic X-rays (radiographs): Essential for detection of decay, tumors, cysts, and bone loss. X-rays also help determine tooth and root positions.
-
Oral cancer screening: Checking the face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, tissues, and gums for any signs of oral cancer.
-
Gum disease evaluation: Checking the gums and bone around the teeth for any signs of periodontal disease.
-
Examination of tooth structures: the teeth are probed for tooth decay and missing teeth are noted.
-
Examination of existing restorations: Current fillings and crowns are checked for possible problems.
Professional dental cleaning: This is sometimes done by the dentist but often completed by one of our hygienists who has special training and is licensed by the State of Virginia. Special instruments are used to remove plaque, a sticky almost invisible film that forms on the teeth and calculus. Calculus is plaque that has been allowed to harden on the teeth both above and below the gum line. If professional teeth cleaning is not performed regularly the bacteria in plaque can produce toxins and inflame the gums. This inflammation can be the start of periodontal disease.
-
Teeth polishing: Following the cleaning, your teeth are polished with a small rubber cup and special polishing paste.
